Taking care of your lawn in winter

Lawns are like an extension of your home. It’s a fun space for the children to play on with the cool grass beneath their feet as well as for adults who want to relax on a hammock perhaps. Its soothing, inviting and the perfect place for family fun time. Backyard picnics, barbeques, star gazing, playing tag and the list goes on. However, lawns are not at their best in winters but as long as you maintain it well, there is no reason for your lawn not to be healthy at least.

If you need to be part of the green movement, then first and foremost is to clean up your lawn. Do not leave any debris be it leaves or toys in the garden. They not only smother the grass but also leave an open invitation for pests, insects and conditions that foster diseases. Secondly, the last couple of times you mow the law make sure you lower the height of your mower by about 0.5 to 1 inch. This is because like debris, excessively long grass can smother itself and create disease conditions and are themselves at the risk of freezing and thawing conditions. On the other hand, be careful not to mow down the grass very low as an extremely low height leaves the grass vulnerable to extreme weather conditions since its crown becomes exposed.

Be careful not to run too much traffic over the grass since while covered by snow, the grass may be able to withstand moderate traffic but overusing the path will make the green grass grow back more slowly. Lastly, make sure to monitor the weather conditions fairly regularly since despite the resiliency of the turf, extreme weather can be harmful for the long run. Also, do weed the grass and as long as you follow these few simple steps, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t regain your beautiful lawn when spring comes again.
